We clean - stain - seal pergolas, screened porches, as well as multi-level decks. We treat cedar, as well as pressure treated pine. We remove failing, unsightly, weathered water based, as well as weathered oil based deck stains and sealers and start you off on a simple, easy, quality deck maintenance schedule that will be cost-efficient for you in the long run. Deck restoration, cleaning staining and sealing has been our specialty for over 25 years!
Below is a break-down of our Deck Restoration Process step by step.
Deck Refinishing Step 1: Initial Deck Walk Through
We first meet with you to go over the condition of your deck - Whether your deck is new, or very weathered we go over details such as - sun exposure how much sun exposure, or how little the deck receives will dictate the products we recommend treating your deck with. I will be using a sequence of videos from a deck restoration and refinishing job in Decatur (Sagamore Hills) to demonstrate our deck restoration process from beginning to end.
Video below is of my initial walk-through of the deck- Notice how weathered the deck looks. I decided the deck was a good candidate for a solid color stain, as it was not only extremely weathered, it also showed signs of a water-based semi transparent stain (like Behr which is very difficult to remove). I scheduled a deck strip to remove as much of the failing stain as possible followed by a wood brightening which not only brightens, and neutralizes wood surfaces , it also reveals any remnants of the old stain that may still remain. These two initial deck restoration steps ensure that the new solid color stain (we were planning on using) will penetrate and bond well to the newly exposed wood substrate.
Deck Refinishing Step 2: Deck Cleaning, Brightening Walk Through
After a thorough stripping, cleaning and brightening, and allowing the deck to dry , I performed a second walk-through to determine the effectiveness of the work. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the deck stripping, cleaning and brightening performed. I changed our plan since the old deck stain was +90% removed and scheduled to use a penetrating oil based stain and sealer to follow. Notice how the wood grain is visible again, the natural appearance of the wood tone . This deck rejuvenation is not achieved by using bleach, it is achieved by using very low pressure (we never, ever use high pressure on decks, or any exterior wood (even IPE)) it is also achieved by using deck specific cleaners strippers and brighteners. Now that the deck is clean we will allow the deck to dry for a few days. Once fully dry it will be ready for step 3 Deck Staining and Sealing.
Deck Refinishing Step 3: Deck Stain And Seal Refinishing Walk Through
After allowing several days for the deck to dry thoroughly we went ahead and applied a penetrating oil based TWP Stain and Sealer to the deck. Once staining and sealing was completed I allowed a couple of days for the deck stain to dry thoroughly. After a few days I performed a third walk-through. On the third walk-through we can see that the penetrating oil based TWP stain and seal transformed the deck from a very bright yellow deck into a beautiful wood deck with enhanced grain, and a very natural appearance. No remnants of the old stain remain, no mildew, no moss, no algae, - just a natural wood finish. Using a penetrating oil based stain and sealer such as TWP as well as keeping a maintenance schedule will afford this deck the best chance to stand up to the unforgiving weather extremes we have in Atlanta. Now that the deck is looking great, and I've had a chance to evaluate the final appearance we move to step 4 - Final walk through.
Deck Refinishing Step 4: Satisfied Customer
During this step we go over the work with our customers, explain the work that was performed, as well as the steps they can take to get the most out of their deck stain's life.During this step we also go over our recommended maintenance schedule. During this step I make sure the customer is 100 percent satisfied. Only after this step do we ever discuss payment- we never ask for money up-front, deposits, progress payments.. We are experts in our field and we believe it shows. Our customer was kind enough to evaluate his experience with our restoration services , and hope it illustrates the care, as well as the levels of customer satisfaction we strive for. Deck restoration, deck staining and sealing has been our signature service for 25+ years, and we work hard everyday to make sure we live up to our own standards. From the initial call to the final walk-through we want you to feel you got 100 percent of your money's worth.
I believe this deck restoration project demonstrates the results a proper deck restoration can accomplish. We hope this series of videos aid in illustrating our systematic, time proven approach to restoring, refinishing decks in the Atlanta area.

Deck Refinishing FAQ's
Q- Will I need to be home?
A: No, you don’t need to be home for any portion of the project. |
. Q- Can we see color samples?
A: we can drop off appropriate wood stain , sealer, and paint samples (pressure treated, cedar, hardwood) as well as send you a link to our deck stain gallery. We can also apply samples to your existing deck (for a nomial fee) this step takes out the guesswork of how your deck will look with a particular stain and seal, or deck paint. |
(ipeQ: How long should we stay off the deck after stain/seal is applied?
A: It depends on your type of deck whether it is a hardwood deck (Ipe, Cumaru, etc) cedar, etc. It also depends whether we used an oil based or water based sealer, or an oil based or water based deck solid stain (paint). Normally we recommend staying off the deck for 3 days at the least (very light traffic). Heavy traffic after a week. We can go over all these particulars at time of estimate. |
Q: Are the chemicals you use to clean our fence, deck toxic, or will they kill our plants, shrubs?
A: we try to use pet, plant safe deck and fence cleaning agents whenever possible. In the case of stripping old deck stains and sealers we use a mild caustic stripper which we pre/post treat adjacent shrubs, plants, as well as ensure not to leave puddles. |
