Ipe Cleaning, Sanding, Sealing ImagesIpe Refinishing walk through |
About Our Ipe Restoration ServicesSince the early to mid-2000’s Ipe decks have become a more durable, furniture-grade decking alternative over composite, pine, or cedar decks in the Atlanta area. The advantages of using Ipe are many; One of which is that one can forgo staining, sealing without worry of rot as is the case with pine, or cedar decks. A weathered Ipe deck is attractive, rustic, yet has a smooth, splinter-free surface that will last for many years worry-free. If, however one prefers to keep the beautiful, vibrant, fresh look of new Ipe it involves maintaining Ipe with Ipe-specific cleaners as well as protectants. Ipe, unlike softwood decks requires Ipe specific maintenance which includes the right cleaning, the right brightening as well as using Ipe-specific oils. Many deck builders (with all good intentions) start off a deck’s life on an unsound foundation which includes cleaning Ipe with the wrong product, using the wrong type of oil, over-applying the oil, not wiping excess, or a combination of all. Painters, and handymen have gone as far as applying varnishes, sanding sealers, and water-borne stains to Ipe which will cause severe complications in the short/long term. In the course of the last 10 years, as Ipe has become more, and more popular we’ve encountered many combinations of these“applicator error” scenarios. We strongly suggest to a new Ipe owner that it is better to skip a maintenance cycle than it is to apply the wrong product to your Ipe causing costly restoration down the road. Our Ipe Finishing, Refinishing ProcessOur process varies depending on your Ipe’s condition, previous treatment, orientation of deck (relative to sun exposure) it involves evaluating your Ipe’s condition, determining the best course of action. There are normally three types of situations: New Ipe Finishing ProcessWe use time-proven techniques to clean new ipe involving gentle ipe specific cleaning products as well as Ipe brighteners which accentuate the Ipe grain. Once Ipe has dried we apply Ipe oils by hand for a specific amount of time, and wiping off excess for a beatiful finish. Please note: although the cleaner we use is pet and plant safe we still take precautions to cover small plants as they can wilt. Weathered Ipe Cleaning Sealing ProcessFor weathered Ipe that has the correct Ipe oil, but just weathered to a gray patina – We use a powerful ipe specific deck cleaner which will remove graying, weathered Ipe oils, as well as surface dirt, mildew, pollen from all Ipe surfaces. We follow-up with a wood brightener which brings back the rich Ipe grain and reddish brown Ipe color. We finish off the restoration by applying the correct Ipe oil (brand, and color will be discussed in person – whichever is best suited to your decks orientation, exposure). Please note: although the cleaner we use is pet and plant safe we still take precautions to cover small plants. Restoring Ipe decking that was done incorrectlyIpe decking that was done incorrectly by other contractors, etc needs to have the finish removed and stripped. |

Ipe Restoration FAQ's
Q- Will I need to be home?
A: No, you don’t need to be home for any portion of the hardwood restoration project. |
Q- Can we see color samples?
A: we can drop off appropriate wood samples (Ipe, Massarnaduba, Cumaru, Garapa, Tigerwood, Ironwood, and all other Brazilian Hardwood decking.) where you can visualize your Brazilian wood decking final appearance. Alternatively we can put down actual stain and seal samples on your Brazilian decking so you can see the final appearance of the oil of your choice. |
Q: How long should we stay off the deck after stain/seal is applied?
A: For Ipe, and similar Brazilian hardwood decks we normally recommend staying off the deck for 3 days at the very least (very light traffic). Heavy traffic after a week. Keep in mind not to drag furniture on your Ipe (or Brazilian hardwood decking) until after a month when the oil has had a chance to fully cure. |
Q: Which is the best stain and seal to use on an Ipe deck?
A: There are many, many oils that we can use On Ipe, and other Brazilian hardwood. We use Messmer's UV plus, Armstrong-Clark, IPE oil, and can re-apply Cabot Australian Timber oil (not our first choice for IPE, but if that's what you already have it isn't a bad product per-se). Ipe is a very dense wood and needs to be oiled with an oil specifically formulated for Ipe. Brazilian hardoods. |
