About our Fence Painting Services:
We are first and foremost a deck and fence cleaning staining, sealing, refinishing, painting and restoration company. Deck and Fence staining is what we do, it is all we've done since '93 - and we do it right the first time! We have been cleaning, staining , sealing and painting decks and fences in the North Atlanta area for over 25 years.
Considering Painting Your Fence?
Unlike decks where water pools on deck flooring - fences can be painted with long lasting results - A well prepared, properly painted fence will last many years providing privacy, as well as an aesthetic focal point to one’s property. We have painted (solid color stain) many Atlanta fences since the early 90's. Products have changed over the years - newer fence stains allow fence panels to breathe minimizing rot, minimizing peeling on fences. We believe a solid color fence paint is a good investment and will provide many years of worry -free service.
When painting your fence (Either DIY or when you hire out): - Remember:
Prep is everything! Using the proper chemical/s when cleaning a new fence prior to painting is a crucial first step that many unfortunately miss. Cleaning (untreated, unpainted) wood with bleach is a bad idea - Chlorine removes wood's natural colors. It also destroys the glue (lignin) that holds wood fibers together. Never under any circumstances clean wood with bleach! (unless it is painted already). We use, and recommend a mild oxygen-based wood cleaner followed by a wood brightener with added surfactants that allow dwell time on the fence surface thereby doing their job more efficiently without having to resort to harsh chemicals like bleach. Using a brightener does two things – first it opens the pores of the wood ( helping fence paint bonding agents to penetrate wood pores as paint engineers designed) second it balances out the PH effects of the cleaner so any remnants of the cleaner are 'neutralized' and won't attack the new stain paint job. These two steps if not performed ensure your fence stain, and paint will not perform (last) as intended by the manufacturer. Fence stain and paint preparation- as in properly pressure cleaning is the foundation everything else is built on!
Allow proper time for the fence to dry before painting - even though a fence will not allow water to pool on its surface like a deck - neglecting to allow proper dry time for a fence before painting will result in mildew surfacing shortly after staining/painting AND resurfacing over, and over. Even if you pressure wash the fence , and paint it again the mildew trapped beneath the paint will keep resurfacing. Never, ever paint a fence the next day after pressure washing, don’t do it! We prefer to wait at least 3-4 days during dry sunny summer months more-so during cooler temps, or if the fence is under a dense tree canopy (all day shade).
NEVER skimp on quality products!- A top of the line Cabot, Benjamin- Moore fence paint, fence stain are well worth the additional cost considering how great they'll look and how long they'll last! Never use 'builder grade' stains or paints - it might seem frugal to do so up front, but will cost you dearly long-term.
Read all paint labels before starting a job! We will never claim we know everything about fence staining and painting. There are new products being introduced to the market regularly. This is why it is so important to read product TDS=Technical data sheets. These will guide you step-by-step how to properly apply the fence stain and paint (as the manufacturer intended) to get the best results possible and longest life out of your fence paint job!
Best way to save big on a fence paint job is by doing it yourself! Seriously- I’ll never, ever not guide someone on how to do the job themselves. I can appreciate a person who likes getting their hands dirty, or would like to save some money. The best advice I can give someone who wants to paint a fence on the cheap is - buy the best materials you can afford, and do it yourself! You'll be glad you did. Never, ever go with the lowest bid or ask to have sub-par paint on your fence You'll regret it.
Paint VS Stain - Which should i use on my fence?
On fences i lean toward a solid stain/paint - water doesn't pool on fence surfaces like on decks, and fence stains have become more breathable. Using a fence paint on your fence is not a bad idea - especially when you factor in maintenance costs, etc.
Pluses for fence paint:
>Lasts longer than semi-transparent fence stain (if applied properly) maintenance schedule is a little less regular, yet one cannot just ignore a painted fence.
>infinite amount of colors, so if you have a color consultant, and want something specific for your fence - or if your HOA is demanding a particular solid stain color , then a solid fence stain/paint would be an excellent choice.
>Easier to clean than a stained fence. By a longshot!
Minuses for fence paint:
>Once you go solid you can't go back to semi-transparent - This is a big deal - so there is no going back once you go solid.
>Lets zero grain through - if you like to see the woodgrain solid is not a good choice - think about going with a semi-transparent stain instead.
>There is always the possibility of some peeling. It is a paint, and as well intentioned prep may be there could be some chipping here, and there after many years. Semi transparent will never peel (but requires a more frequent maintenance schedule).
My fence is brand new - Do i need to pressure wash it if it is new?
Yes you do.
>First - Unless the fence has sat for 6 months (and we suggest you wait at least 3 months if not 6 before you paint your fence) it will have mill glazing- Mill glazing will not allow the bonding agents of solid stains, semi-transparent stains to penetrate the wood pores, thereby having all the bonding agents on the surface of the wood.
>Second - The wood had a high moisture content for a long time while sitting at the lumber yard, etc. (pressure treated wood) so therefore there are mildew, mold spores, as well as fungus (what actually attacks wood and feeds off (wood rot)) all over the wood. Just because you don't see them doesn't mean they're not there.
>Third the fence will need to have surface dirt, grime washed off, as well as a wood brightener that will open up the pores of the wood.
There are many schools of thought, my personal opinion is to never, touch a fence until it has sat for at least 6 months after being built (PRESSURE TREATED PINE fences). This ensures all moisture content in the wood has permeated away from the inside, so wood moisture underneath the paint won't be a problem - You will also ensure that the first coat of fence stain/paint penetrates the wood pores (bonds) as intended thereby laying down a sound foundation for future treatments. If your fence is CEDAR waiting 3 months is fine, or if you can (chemically - (cleaning, brightening), or mechanically - (sanding) remove the mill glazing you can stain, paint a cedar fence right away.

A: we can drop off appropriate fence paint, and stain samples (pressure treated, cedar, hardwood) as well as send you a link to our deck stain gallery. We can also apply samples to your existing fence (for a nominal fee) this step takes out the guesswork of how your fence will look with a particular stain and seal, or fence paint. |
How often do we have to clean the fence?
A: A quality fence paint job usually requires once-a-year fence pressure cleaning. Using a gentle cleaner like simple green, or an oxygen-based cleaner should be enough to remove mildew, dirt , grim from all fence surfaces without compromising the fence paint job. |
Q: Are the chemicals you use to clean our fence, deck toxic, or will they kill our plants, shrubs?
A: we try to use pet, plant safe deck and fence cleaning agents whenever possible. In the case of stripping old deck stains and sealers we use a mild caustic stripper which we pre/post treat adjacent shrubs, plants, as well as ensure not to leave puddles. |
